Though Liverpool had little issue finding the back of the net last term they were very leaky at the back and the likes of Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Toure and Daniel Agger all failed to provide Martin Sktel with a solid partner in the centre of the Anfield defence, a role that 24 year old Croatian Lovren would certainly fill with aplomb.
Southampton paid Lyon £8.5m for Lovren last summer and whilst Ronald Koeman may have been keen to keep hold of the player the south-coast side will almost double their money in the space of a year, funds that can then be re-invested with the Dutch manager already publicly confirming his interest in Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar, stating;
“Ron [Vlaar] would definitely be an option.
“But I think he won’t be cheap right now. Let’s just wait and see.
